They make the Umineko anime look amazing. And please by god do not watch the train-wrecks that are Higurashi Gou and Sotsu. There is Rei and Kira for example, but they're not important. You don't have to go any further, as there are additional seasons but they're kind of unnecessary.
Just only watch Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (26 episodes) and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai (24 episodes).
I don't know how accessible the novel is, but the anime is easily online for free. I've never actually read the visual novel, having only watched the anime, but the anime is an amazing adaptation in which every higurashi fan I've known has agreed with. Order for the MAXIMIZED experience below: If you feel like doing a second Umineko run-through, then the Manga is perfect for that. Don't worry about messing up the order, as the visual novel will literally only let you progress in order first. So start out with Umineko no Naku Koro Ni in the visual novel, then after that, then Umineko No Naku Koro Ni Chiru.
There are questions and there will be hints, but the "answer" will not outright be blatantly given to you by the sound novel, but it will for the manga. Umineko fans refuse to acknowledge its existence for good reason (it's not completely terrible as a stand-alone as I did enjoy it, with it being my first Umineko experience, but compared to the novel/manga it's awful).Īny Umineko fan would recommend reading the visual novel first. But ultimately, it's still not necessary, but there are connections. Though you can just watch Higurashi and Higurashi Kai, as it would go quickly and would add into your umineko experience before-hand. No, reading Higurashi isn't necessary at all, but it does add to the experience as a character from Umineko technically is from Higurashi (don't ask, you'll just give yourself a head-ache).
